Problem Solving
Students encounter numerous problems both within and outside of school. In speech and language class student learn to work with people and solve problems more effectively. We work on developing and strengthening good thinking skills and habits, including the ones listed below.
Understanding problems What is going on? Who is involved? How does the problem affect me? Do I have all the information I need to solve this problem? Have I ever solved a problem like this before? How can I state the problem clearly?
Prioritizing the problem How big of a problem is this? Is this a major or minor issue? Do I need help? Can I try and solve it myself?
Sequencing problems Which problem or part of the problem should I tackle first? What are the steps I should follow in order to solve the problem?
Determining causes What caused or is causing the problem? What could I do to eliminate this from happening again?
Making inferences What is the bigger issue here? Is there something missing that is adding to the problem? What missing information might help me solve the problem?
Brainstorming solutions What are all the ways I can think of to solve the problem? Who or what do I need to solve the problem?
Predicting Could there be more than one way to solve the problem? What will happen if I don't solve the problem?
Choosing the best solution Which solution would be the best? Can I use more than one solution. Why did you use that solution?
Planning What is my plan to solve this problem? What should I do next time it happens?
