Understanding and Answering Questions
A big part of speech and language class focuses on how to understand and effectively answer all types of questions. Wh-Questions are who, what, where, when, why, and how. Typically, Yes/No questions are easier, because they require a single word response but one still must listen and understand the context of the questions to answer correctly.
Answering a wh- question appropriately involves these steps:
- One must attend to and understand the wh- question word. What=thingWhen=timeHow many =number
- How=way
- Why=reason
- Where=place
- Who= person
- Understand the overall meaning of the question and relate it to the wh- question word.
- Think of an appropriate response.
- Evaluate the response to make sure it gives the information asked for by the question.
- Verbalize an appropriate response clearly.
