  • Physical Education Word of the Week!!!!

     

    The Word of the Week (WOW!) is an

     

    initiative that introduces a new robust and

     

    rigorous vocabulary word once a week.

     

     

    The WOW is integrated through all grades and

     

    is posted on the dry erase board.  See below for

     

    a list of our vocabulary words, the definition,

     

    how it applies in our class, and how the students

     

    are able to apply it in their everyday life.

    Control: To direct the actions or function of something.

    In Phys. Ed. we had to demonstrate control over the soccer ball while dribbling, passing, and trapping.

    Our students application:

    "We control our behavior by being respectful and kind to everyone around us."

    "We use the handlebars on our bicycle to control the direction we move."

    Anticipate: To expect or predict; to regard as probable.

    In  Phys. Ed. we anticipate how a playground will bounce when we apply varied amounts of force.

    Our Students application:

    "When the sun is setting I anticipate that my bedtime is soon."

    "When I wake up to the smell of pancakes I anticipate that I will have them for breakfast"

    Always: Without exception; continuous.

    In Phys. Ed. we always try our best.

    Our Students application:

    "I always brush my teeth before I go to bed."

    "We always have dinner at night."

    Consistent: Always acting or behaving in the same way.

    In P.E. we are consistent with our expectations of the students.

    Our student's application:

    "I am consistently on time for school."

    "I am working on consistently getting good grades in math."

    Exhibit: to show or display outwardly especially by visible signs or actions.

    In P.E. we can exhibit proper technique when working on a skill.

    Our students application:

    "I exhibit good listening skills by following the directions being given."

    "We can exhibit the proper pencil grip when writing."

    Demonstrate: To prove something by showing examples of it.

    In P.E. we demonstrate proper listening position by quietly sitting on our floor spots.

    Our students application:

    "My Dad demonstrated how to hammer a nail into a piece of wood."

    "I demonstrate to my little brother how to hold a pencil."

    Technique: A way of doing something by a special talent or skill.

    In Phys. Ed. we have learned the proper technique in many sport and fitness skills.

    Our students application:

    "My Dad taught me the right technique on how to ride my 2 wheeler."

    "My big brother showed me the right swimming technique."

    Transition: The process or period of changing from one state to another.

    In Phys. Ed. we transition from warm-ups to activity on a daily basis.

    Our students application:

    "Every morning I transition out of my bed into the bathroom."

    "My little sister is going to transition from her crib into a big girl bed."

    Form: The shape or structure of something; established method of order or proceeding.

    In Phys. Ed. we teach the students the proper form on many exercises and athletic movements.

    Our students' application:

    "My Mom shows me the proper form when she drives her car."

    "My teacher showed me the right form for holding my crayon."

    Pace: consistent and continuous speed.

    In Phys. Ed. we teach the students how to pace themselves when we jog.

    Our students' application:

    "My dad always tells me to pace myself when  I am reading."

    "I have a hard time pacing myself when I do the mile jog in gym."

    Differentiate: Recognize what makes something or someone different.

    In Phys Ed. we differentiated the heights of the Chinese jump ropes for each child.

    Our student's application:

    " I can differentiate shapes that I have learned."

    "We differentiate foods that we eat."

    Involuntary: done without will or conscious control.

    Our application: When teaching the Cardiovascular System, we explain that this is an involuntary process.

     

    Our Student's application: 

     

    " I sneeze, and that's involuntary."

    "When I blink, it is an involuntary action."

     

    Perform: to carry out or accomplish.

    Our application: Our students perform exercises and various skills during our class.

    Our Student's application: 

     

    "I perform different dance steps in my dance class."

    "I like when my Mom and I perform jumping jacks."

     

    Pre: a prefix; prior to; before

    Our application: Exercises that we have previously taught the students.

    Our students' application: 

    "We take a spelling pretest to prepare for the actual test."

    "I like to watch the pregame show before an Islanders game."

     

    Dis: a prefix; apart, away

    Our application: We can discover different ways we can travel in the gymnasium.

    Our students' application:

    "My Mom and I disagree on what I should have for breakfast"

     

    Signal: a gesture, action, or sound that is used to convey a message.

     

    Our application: We signal starting and stopping exercises, events, and activities.

     

    Our students' application: 

    "We stop at traffic signals."

    "My soccer coach uses his whistle to signal us to stop moving."
